Chapter 12

Natalie put her hand over her stomach as Denver walked out the door. She couldn’t believe she turned him down. Why?

Well, she knew why. After she sent that crazy email to Welder Man, she determined she would never do another marriage of convenience, never even think about another marriage of convenience. It had been a foolish idea, one that had not been showing faith but a lack of it. She wasn’t going to make that mistake again.

After she’d made the same mistake—over and over again—with men and trusting the wrong guy, she’d finally wised up.

Thankfully, it hadn’t taken as long to get smart about thinking a marriage of convenience would solve all her problems.

She turned toward Mrs. Steiner. “Can I get you some tea?”

Thankfully, her children were still in the playroom and still quiet. That did not necessarily mean anything good. Quietness.

Sometimes it meant that they were busy getting into trouble. Hopefully no one got hurt until she was done entertaining Mrs. Steiner.

It was nice to have a woman to talk to. And Mrs. Steiner had come several times over the fall months when she’d been selling and picking apples and given her a hand.

“No, thank you. I’m not planning on staying long. But if you don’t mind, I’d like to sit down.”

“Of course. Please.” She took the glass that Denver hadn’t touched and set it in the sink. He was such a strong man. Steady, unruffled. He oozed confidence and capableness, like he could do anything.

They probably would make a good team. She would definitely love having a man like that around, anyway. Someone to take some of the burden off her, and once they weren’t so nervous, he seemed to have a sense of humor. That would be nice too.

Trouble was she couldn’t figure out what was in it for him.

Mrs. Steiner sat down on the long end of the table, so Natalie went around and sat directly across from her.

“It’s good to see you. I hope nothing’s wrong,” she said, dying to know what would make Mrs. Steiner come for a casual visit.

“I don’t want to take up too much of your time. I have a feeling you’re going to get very busy today, and it’s only,” she looked at her watch, “11 o’clock.”

“I hope so.” She truly did.

Maybe, since Denver was home, she wouldn’t get any of the money from the Christmas trees. But she hardly even cared; she was just excited about selling them. Too bad no one had shaped them this summer. She’d done some research on it and knew that they needed to be shaped with hedge trimmers in order to really look like real Christmas trees.

It wasn’t too late. Maybe if she had time, she could put her focus on that.

If she found hedge trimmers lying around. She’d have to look. Actually, she had to figure out what they were before she went looking for them. She had no idea what hedge trimmers looked like.

“My husband and I have been talking about you,” Mrs.
